Michael is President of Shaw Advisory Services, where Michael delivers management consulting in the areas of organizational transformation, behavioral science, and compliance.
As Vice President of Ethics & Compliance and a member of the Commercial Leadership Team at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Michael partnered with the executive team to design and deliver a new commercial model and compliance program that transformed the way GSK conducted its $20B+ business in North America. He led an ethics and compliance program that drove measurable positive impact to GSK’s ethical reputation and risk mitigation, while enabling strong business performance, increased employee engagement, and improved patient health outcomes.
Michael served in various leadership roles at Novartis, where he was sought to design, implement, and lead the first global ethics and compliance program for its $10B+ Oncology enterprise after he successfully helped to develop the ethics and compliance program for the $15B+ U.S. Pharmaceuticals business.
Prior to entering the pharmaceutical industry as an in-house compliance professional, Michael was a Director in PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Global Pharmaceutical and Health Sciences Practice where he advised ~24 life sciences companies on how to manage risk, be competitive, and develop an ethical corporate culture. Michael is also a former Senior Counsel with the Office of Inspector General (OIG) of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, where he was recruited to bring his in-house healthcare experience to help develop strategic initiatives for the OIG and practical guidance for the healthcare industry. Michael started his career as in-house counsel for Olsten Health Services, where he helped design the first corporate compliance program for an organization of 30 pharmacies and 400 home health agencies.
Michael is an international speaker on fraud and compliance issues, has been quoted in numerous healthcare industry publications, was the Chair of the Chief Compliance Officer Committee of the Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), was a former Co-Chair in the Pharmaceutical Compliance Forum (PCF), was named Funniest Compliance Officer in America in 2011, and was an Adjunct Professor at Seton Hall School of Law where he has taught Healthcare Fraud & Abuse Law.
